NOTICE OF SPECIAL ASSESSMENT DISTRICT #958 City of Wyandotte, Wayne County, MI TO: THE RESIDENTS AND PROPERTY OWNERS OF THE CITY OF WYANDOTTE, WAYNE COUNTY, MI, AND ANY OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES The City of Wyandotte recognizes the fact that the people of Wyandotte are in need of safe and convenient sidewalks and as a result maintains a sidewalk ordinance to cover this need. The Ordinance (Section 174.011 & 174.012) requires property owners to construct and maintain sidewalks adjacent to their properties. When sidewalks become unsafe or fall into a state of disrepair, it is necessary for this Department to notify the property owners that a problem exists. In an effort to maintain safe sidewalks the city oversees a Sidewalk Program annually. The 2026 Sidewalk Program spans the area bound by Fort Street (M85) to 10th Street, Ford Avenue, and Vinewood. The City has entered into a contract with ROYAL CEMENT to remove and replace the sidewalk slabs as marked by the inspector. This letter is to advise you that if any portion of the sidewalk abutting your property is found to be in an unsafe or deteriorated condition, the City of Wyandotte will mark the sidewalk with ORANGE paint for removal and replacement. If there is an ORANGE “C” (Cracked), “H” (Heaved / Trip Hazard), “P” (Ponding OR Pitting), or “S” (Spalling), the sidewalk shall be replaced. Heaving may be indictive of underlying roots. IF THE SIDEWALK IS NOT MARKED, NO WORK WILL BE COMPLETED. Property owners may remove and replace the sidewalk on their own before the Sidewalk Program commences, but all work shall be completed within (30) thirty days from the date of the letter sent by the City’s Engineering Department. A permit shall be secured for any proposed sidewalk replacement, a pre-pour form inspection is required, and all work shall be completed in order for the City to remove your property from the list of properties needing repairs. Having the work completed on your own, but failing to obtain a permit may result in the city assessing you with the cost to complete the work. Note: The required permit can be obtained at the Engineering Department on the 2nd floor of City Hall. Should you choose NOT to complete the work within the allotted thirty (30) days of the notification; the City will have ROYAL CEMENT remove and replace the sidewalk. Property owners will be special assessed for any work completed by the City’s contractor. The total cost will be assessed and an invoice will be mailed to the property owner in the Spring of 2026. After receiving the assessment invoice, you may pay the full amount or make payments over a five (5) year period at 6% interest. This will be a separate bill from your tax bill. Cost associated with work done by the City’s contractor will vary based on amount of work and/or type of work completed. The costs are based off of the bid results from the 6/24/2024 bid opening. POSSIBLE ITEMS OF WORK: 4”, 6” & 8” sidewalk removal and replacement; and root grinding. If you have any questions, please contact the City of Wyandotte Building and Engineering Department at (734) 324-4550.
