The project seeks to, but is not limited to, restore tree canopy, improve neighborhood environmental quality, and strengthen urban habitat and resilience. The project is funded by the American Forests Urban & Community Forest Initiative. The need for additional tree planting in Pontiac is tied to restoring tree canopy, improving shade, reducing urban heat, supporting stormwater absorption, and increasing biodiversity. Michigan communities have also emphasized urban forestry as a way to improve air quality, resilience to climate impacts, and neighborhood livability, especially where canopy coverage is uneven across the city. Proposals will be evaluated on responsiveness, experience, understanding of the City’s objectives, methodology, community benefits, and purchase price. A shortlist may be invited for interviews, and the selected developer must provide an earnest money deposit equal to 20% of the purchase price. Ultimately, the City seeks a development partner who can transform the Kennett Road Landfill property into a project that delivers economic, social, and community benefits, while responsibly addressing the unique characteristics of the site. The bidder will be required to comply with Michigan statutory prohibitions against discrimination in employment and with employment opportunities for City of Pontiac residents.
