CITY OF FERNDALE - PUBLIC NOTICE Vegetation Maintenance in Public Alleys The City of Ferndale would like to inform residents of an important change regarding the maintenance of vegetation within public alleys. Historically, the City has performed maintenance of vegetation overgrowth in public alleys. Moving forward, the responsibility for maintaining vegetation adjacent to alleys will rest with the abutting property owner. Homeowners are required to ensure that trees, shrubs, grass, and other vegetation on their property are properly maintained and do not encroach into or obstruct the public alley. This change is intended to improve accessibility, safety, and overall maintenance of alleyways throughout the community. Residents are reminded that obstructing public rights-of-way is prohibited under City Code. The following ordinance will be enforced: Section 16-5 - Obstruction Prohibited It shall be unlawful for any person in the city directly or indirectly, himself or by his agent, clerk or employee, to put, place, abandon, leave in, obstruct or encumber, any highway, alley, public place, sidewalk or crosswalk, with any animals, boxes, barrels, posts, fences, buildings, dirt, mud, stones, signs, posts, coal, bricks, building material, rubbish or with any other material or thing whatsoever, except as otherwise authorized by council resolution. It shall also be unlawful for any such person as, aforesaid, to dump any sand, gravel or other thing upon any street or alley or any sidewalk or crosswalk; or to mix any cement, mortar or other thing, upon any street, sidewalk or crosswalk. Property owners are encouraged to regularly inspect and trim vegetation to prevent obstruction of alleys and ensure compliance with City regulations.
